Laura Jane Shouse

Laura Jane Shouse, 75, of Fayetteville, formerly of Davidsonville, Md., died July 12, 2014, in Fayetteville. Jane was born April 5, 1939, in Fayetteville to Merle M. and Genevieve Hewitt Shouse. Jane grew up in Harrison and graduate from Harrison High School in 1957. After graduating, she moved with the family to the Washington, D.C., area where she attended and graduated from George Washington University with a degree in political science. Her career spanned for over 30 years in several departments of the U.S. Government. Her specialty was with the programs for Indians and the disadvantaged. She retired from a position as a federal writer/analyst in 1995, and then in 2005, she moved back to Arkansas and decided on Springdale where some of her family still remained. Since returning to Springdale, she became active with the National Association of Retired Federal Employers and the Fayetteville Senior Center activities. Jane traveled to Harrison frequently to reconnect and participate with the monthly activities of her high school graduating class. She was involved with local card groups, coin collecting, and was interested in antique cars and the opera. Jane was also an avid NCAA college sports fan and followed the Razorback football and basketball teams. Over the years, she rescued, provided a home and cared for many homeless cats. She is survived by one brother, Larry Shouse of Longview, Texas; her uncle, Harold Dean Hewitt of Springdale; as well as nieces, nephews and cousins. Graveside services will be 1 p.m. Friday July 18, 2014, at Maplewood Cemetery in Harrison. Visitation will be Thursday, July 17, 2014, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Sisco Funeral Chapel of Springdale.
