Margaret Mae Nichols Mayhall, 85, passed away Thursday, July 3, 2014, in Fort Smith after a short battle with cancer. She was born May 17, 1929, in Rogers, Ark., to Thomas Andrew and Nellie Louella (Mason) Nichols. She graduated from Bentonville High School in 1947. She was a member of the Bentonville women's basketball team and captain her senior year. She worked at Crow Drug in Bentonville beginning in 1946, where she met her husband, John Mayhall. Margaret also worked for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company as a telephone operator. She was an appointment coordinator for Dr. Gill and Dr. Adair for 35 years. She was a member of the Beta Sigma Phi sorority and was awarded Girl of the Year in 1968. Margaret retired in 1994 and moved to Fort Smith to be closer to her daughter's family. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Fort Smith. She is survived by her husband of 63 years, John Mayhall; daughter, Mary Beth Chambers and husband, Don of Fort Smith; granddaughter, Scarlett Chambers of Fort Smith; brother, Harley Jack Nichols of San Jose, Calif.; brother-in-law, Carl Mayhall and his wife Kathy, of Rogers Ark.; and numerous nieces and nephews. Margaret was preceded in death by her parents; four brothers, Dewey, Jerry, Rex and Raymond Nichols; and eight sisters, Agnes Williams, Eva Grayson, Blanche Styre, Juanita Baker, Zelma Nichols, Mary Kirby, Gertrude Brewer and Betty Wright. Cremation was under the direction of Edwards Funeral Home in Fort Smith, Ark. Memorial service will be held on Wednesday, July 9, at 2 p.m. at Stockdale-Moody Funeral Chapel in Rogers, Ark., with private interment at Bentonville City Cemetery in Bentonville.
