Larry K. Newman, Colonel (Retired) U.S. Army, a resident of Berryville, Ark., was born Oct. 1, 1929, in Berryville, Ark., a son of Clay Altus and Blanche Helen (Hanby) Newman. He departed this life Tuesday, Jan. 28, 2014, in Berryville, Ark., at the age of 84 years. Larry proudly served in the United States Army for more than 31 years and fought in the Korean and Vietnam wars. He was a member of the First Christian Church of Berryville, and was a past president of the Rotary Club and a former fire department chief in Berryville. He was also a member of the Elks Lodge and the IOOF. On May 4, 1985, he was united in marriage with Norma Jeannine Hale, who survives him of the home. He is also survived by two sons, Larry Clay and wife, Elinor Newman, of Cassville, Mo., Clyde (Brud) and wife, Carol Newman, of Shell Knob, Mo.; one stepdaughter, Jaquita and husband, Ramsay Ball, of Fayetteville, Ark.; sister, Shirley Nan and husband, Gene Porter, of Berryville, Ark.; six grandchildren and five great-grandchildren; several nieces and nephews; and a host of friends and loved ones. Larry was preceded in death by his parents; first wife, Margaret Earle Newman; and stepson, Mark Hale Phillips. Graveside service will be 11 a.m. Friday, Jan. 31, 2014, at Berryville Memorial Park Cemetery, with Skip French officiating. Service arrangements were under the direction of Nelson Funeral Service.
