Sophie Charlotte Papp (nee Bunge), born March 25, 1926, died peacefully in her sleep Feb. 21, 2014. Her college friends called her "Bugs." Our dad called her "C.P." My brother and I called her "Mom." She never liked her first name, so shockingly (to us, at least, when we found out as young adults — you can do that??!!) she legally changed it to "S. Charlotte" when she married our dad on June 20, 1952. She was a competitive swimmer and diver in high school and college. Got her degree in physical education from the LaCrosse State Teacher's College (now the University of Wisconsin–LaCrosse) in 1947. Retired from the Ladish Company, Cudahy, Wis., in 1980. Champion golfer her entire life. Champion bowler. Master gardener. Master knitter and crocheter. Master quilter. Never mastered the art of cooking. Played the stock market extremely well. Learned the art of diplomacy and herding kangaroos by organizing many golf groups, including 18 couples from the Milwaukee area that golfed all over the Midwest every summer weekend for 20+ years. Member and past-president of the Milwaukee Women's Bowling Association. Lifetime member and Retired Champion of the Thursday Grant Park Women's Golf Club (Milwaukee, Wis.). Member since 1994 of the Women's 18-Hole Golf League, Bella Vista. Organizer and member of the Tuesday Tees and Papp's Putters, both in Bella Vista. Member of the Altar Guild at Grace Lutheran Church, Lowell, Ark. Member of the Wandering Foot Quilt Guild (Milwaukee, Wis.) and the Calico Cut-Ups Quilt Guild (Bella Vista). She had a stroke at age 83 on a sunny summer day in August 2009 while getting ready for a golf match. She loved Jesus and is in Heaven right now, probably playing one of God's magnificent golf courses with our dad. She was our Mom and Grandma. Preceded in death by her husband and our father, Frank J. Papp Jr. Survived by son, Edward (Sabine) Papp of Hamburg, Germany; daughter, Karen (Donald) Schneider of Wausau, Wis.; and grandchildren, Clara and Christopher Papp, and Jordan, Christian (Crystal) and Graham Schneider. Memorial service will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 1, 2014, at Grace Lutheran Church, 415 N. Sixth Place, Lowell, AR 72745. Memorials appreciated to Grace Lutheran Church School Fund, Lowell, Ark. She loved and was fiercely loyal to her family and friends, and everyone she met became her friend. Have fun in Heaven, Mom.
