Charles Dawes Burns, 89, of Fort Smith, Ark. passed away on Thursday, Feb. 13, 2014 in a local hospital. He was born in Benton Harbor, Mich. to Riley and Letha Burns. He honorably served his country in the US Army serving in the 462nd ordinance evacuation company during World War II. Following the war he went to work for Whirlpool and retired 42 years later as a supervisor. He was an active member of Bethel Lutheran Church and was in the Bethel Bible class. He was preceded in death by his wife of 61 years; two brothers; and one sister. Funeral services will be 10:30 a.m.. Monday, Feb. 17, 2014 at Bethel Lutheran Church with burial with honors in the U.S. National Cemetery under the direction of Ocker-Putman Funeral Home of Fort Smith, Ark. He is survived by two daughters, Susan Phillips and her husband Dan of Smyrna, Georgia and Beth Burrell of Fayetteville, Ark.; four grandchildren, Megan Hinson and her husband Marcus of Rogers, Ark., Kate Hardage and her husband Aaron of Little Rock, Ark., Josh Delozier and his wife Tara of Centerton, Ark., and Sarah Burrell of Fayetteville, Ark.; and three great grandchildren, Owen and Colin Hinson and Miles Hardage.
