Charles Edwin Gill

Charles "Chuck" Edwin Gill, 88, of Bella Vista died Friday, Sept. 13, 2013, at Concordia Care Center in Bella Vista, following a long illness. He was born May 23, 1925, in Steubenville, Ohio, the son of Edith Dell Wheaton Gill and Joseph Winfield Gill. When Chuck was just a year old, his father passed away. The family then moved to Port Clinton, Ohio, where he was raised and educated. He was active and excelled in high school basketball and football. In June of 1997, he was inducted into the Port Clinton High School Hall of Fame for excellence in sports. Following high school graduation, Chuck enlisted in the U.S. Naval Aviation, serving from 1943 through 1945. He then attended Baldwin Wallace College in Berea, Ohio, and Devry School in Chicago, Ill., where he graduated with a degree in electrical engineering. Chuck was an electrical engineer with Rockwell Collins, Boeing International in Cedar Rapids, Iowa, for 35 years, retiring in 1986. While working at Rockwell, he earned his private pilot's license and was instrumental in forming the Rockwell Flying Club. Chuck is survived by his wife of 65 years, Maddy, whom he married Dec. 21, 1947, in Port Clinton, Ohio. He is also survived by one son, Thomas Gill and wife, Kathy, of Roscoe, Ill.; three daughters, Pamela Mullin and her husband, Thomas, of Centennial, Colo., Sally Gill of Woodbury, Minn., and Cynthia McCabe of Rogers, Ark.; nine grandchildren and five great-granddaughters. He was preceded in death by his parents, two brothers and three sisters. He was a member of Bella Vista Community Church for 26 years, Men's 9-hole Golf for 18 years and Community Church Men in Action. At Chuck's request, no services are planned. Chuck's family will always be grateful to the Concordia Care Center staff and to the staff of Circle of Life Hospice.
