Norma Irene Allen Mitchell

Norma Irene (Allen) Mitchell died Monday, March 18, 2013, in McKinney, Texas, at the age of 94. She was born in Urbana, Iowa, on Oct. 6, 1918, to Sumner Sherman and Cora Belle (Butterfield) Allen. She graduated from Anamosa, Iowa, High School and attended Iowa State Teachers College. Norma married Robert Marion Mitchell on June 11, 1939, in Cedar Rapids, Iowa. She then attended additional college courses at Coe College and began many years of substitute teaching while raising her family. She also taught Sunday school in many churches throughout the years. The family lived in Cambridge, Mass., during World War II. They returned to Cedar Rapids and then moved to Richardson, Texas. Following retirement, Norma and Bob moved to Scottsdale, Ariz., Socorro, N.M., and then Rogers, Ark. Norma returned to Dallas, Texas, in 2006 to be near her children. Her hobbies were golf, bridge, bowling, knitting and crocheting, walking and reading. Norma was preceded in death by her husband in 1997; two brothers; and seven sisters. She is survived by three children: one son, Kenneth R. Mitchell and wife, Donna, of McKinney, Texas; two daughters, Peggy Mitchell and husband, David, of Dallas, Texas, and Ruth Mitchell-Golladay and husband, Gary Golladay, of Smith Mountain Lake, Va.; three grandchildren, Curtis Hancock of Gig Harbor, Wash., Dirk Mitchell and wife, Amy, of Frisco, Texas, and Ashley Mitchell Anderson and husband, Jeff, of Rockwall, Texas; six great-grandchildren, Audra, Matthew and Brandon Hancock, Madison and Mason Mitchell and Tripp Anderson; one great-great-grandchild, James Hancock; one sister, Geraldine Thomas of Tama, Iowa; and many nieces and nephews. A memorial service was held in McKinney, Texas, on Saturday, May 11. Burial will be at 9:30 a.m. Friday, May 17 at Benton County Memorial Park in Rogers, Ark.
