Jim merged Shearin & Company with Harris McHaney Realtors to create Harris McHaney Shearin. Due to health issues, Jim retired from the Residential Company to focus on The Shearin Hathaway Group Commercial Realtors, which was the area's first exclusive commercial brokerage firm which he co-founded in 1997.

Kelley Shearin followed her father into commercial sales and stayed his business partner and later became his full-time caregiver sharing love, devotion and honor with her mother and brother, Cole, who moved back from Tennessee to share the last of his life while receiving his wisdom and blessings during his fight against colorectal cancer. Jim entered Washington Regional Home Hospice Jan. 14, 2013.

Jim was a teacher, a leader of men and women, a visionary, a good friend, husband, father, and grandfather of Brett Shearin and Falon Hanson.
