Clarence H. Young

Clarence H. Young, of Fayetteville, Ark., passed away at Butterfield Trail Village on Tuesday, Nov. 6, 2012, at the age of 94. He was born in Little Rock, Ark., May 27, 1918, to parents Paul Young, Sr., and Eva Chandler Young. In 1941, he married Dorothy Lucille Hankins of Little Rock. They had two children, Sandra Ann and Jack Herbert Young. Clarence served his country in WWII as an Army Air Corps pilot, achieving the rank of Major. He remained in the Active Reserve for many years after the war. He joined his brother's architectural firm, Paul Young and Associates, in 1946 in Fayetteville. His greatest joy was working on the sanctuary plans for the current Central Methodist Church. Throughout the years, Clarence and Dorothy made significant contributions to Fayetteville's growing community. He served as president and secretary for Fayetteville's noon Lion's Club. He and Dorothy were one of 15 founding couples of the Town Club, which started as a friendship club in 1947 and continues to this day. Clarence was an avid golfer. Many golfers at the Fayetteville Country Club declared he had the "best looking swing on the course!" He had several holes-in-one and even won a trip to Europe. In addition to golf, he was also an accomplished gardener and artist. He enjoyed painting landscapes and flowers in watercolor. Some of his favorite plantings were the dogwood trees, oak leaf hydrangeas, azaleas and rhododendrons that flourished near the front door of their home. In 2007, Clarence and Dorothy moved to Butterfield Trail Village where they enjoyed "smelling the roses" for the next five years. They made many friends in this special community who grew to feel like family to them. Clarence was a faithful father and husband and loved his family deeply. He was a man of integrity and was admired and respected by all who knew him. He is preceded in death by his parents; and his brothers, Paul and Maurice. He leaves behind his wife, Dorothy of 70 years; a daughter, Sandra White and husband, Charles, of Florida; a son, Jack Young and wife, Cathy, of California; five grandchildren; and two great-grandchildren. He was also a favorite uncle to six nephews. Memorial services are 11 a.m. Friday, Nov. 16, in the sanctuary of Central United Methodist Church, with the Rev. J. Anthony Holifield officiating. A reception with light refreshments will follow the services. Private burial will be held at Fayetteville National Cemetery with Military Honors.
