Aurea Julieta Wages

Aurea Julieta Wages, 74, of Fayetteville, died Saturday, July 28, 2012, in Fayetteville. She was born Aug. 15, 1937, in Colon City, Panama, the daughter of Maximino Barrera and Elba Joaquina Marino de Barrera. She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry O. Wages Sr. Aurea Julieta Wages was a woman of spirit, passion, intellect and courage. For those who knew and loved her during her life, words of admiration will not suffice, neither to describe her nor reflect the sense of loss at her passing from us. The various appellations through which she was known — Aurea, Julieta, Julie and Mrs. Wages — speak to the many associations and relationships she enjoyed in Fayetteville and in Northwest Arkansas. She was a wife, mother, sister, teacher, translator and friend. Through her relationships, whether with family members, co-workers or friends, she consistently demonstrated her ideals of fairness and equality; she never allowed stereotypes or what the norms were supposed to be influence her thoughts or actions. Whether teaching Spanish in local adult education programs, working as a translator in local schools and industries, or simply listening to her friends, she brought her interpersonal skills, honesty, commitment and zest for life to the task at hand. Aurea Julieta had the gift of making each person she met and spent time with feel special. She was never happier than when in the presence of family and friends. Her experiences in life and of living between two cultures, found unity with her wit and wisdom. Conversations with Aurea were long ones, and those lucky enough to have been so engaged with her always left reluctantly, and on departing, felt blessed and convinced there was no way time could have been better spent. Not this side of Heaven. She is survived by two sons, Harry Wages Jr. and his wife, Sara, of Fayetteville, and Max Wages of Centerton; six sisters, Mirna Alicia Barrera Marino, Edda Cecilia Camacho Marino de Bonilla, Marta Eugenis Barrera Marino Viuda de Perez, Aida Idabel Barrera Marino, Huzmira Ofelia Santizo Marino de Rodriquez and Elba Joaquina Barrera Marino; a brother, Maximino Demetrio Barrera Marino; four grandchildren, Heather Wages, Brooke Wages, Anthony Wages and Jaxon Wages. Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. Thursday, Aug. 2, before the service time at 10 a.m. at Moore's Chapel, with the Rev. Don George officiating.
