Lela Laney Shipman

Lela Nickell Laney Shipman, 91, of Fayetteville went to be with the Lord Tuesday, Dec. 25, 2012, in Springdale. She was born Sept. 16, 1921, in Hazel Valley, Ark., the daughter of Fred Nickell and Angie Eldridge Nickel. During World War II, she repaired the disabled Catalina airplanes coming back from combat at Ryan Aeronautical in San Diego, Calif. After returning, she was a food service manager for the University of Arkansas for many years among other positions. She is preceded in death by her first husband, Charles Kenneth Laney; her parents; two brothers, Archie and Donald Nickell; and sisters, Nadine Turrentine and Bobbye Lee Tisdale. Survivors include her husband, Chester Shipman of the home; sons, Gary (Joy) Laney of Searcy and Jeff (Stephanie) Laney of Fayetteville; two stepsons, Buddy Shipman, (Carman) of Mansfield, Texas, and Stan Shipman (Sylvia) of Springtown, Texas; stepdaughter, Mary Alice Macias of Kansas City, Mo.; sister, Pat (Deryle) Oxford of Springdale; three grandsons, Douglas (Ina) Laney, Andrew (Katie) Laney, Marcus Laney, and triplets, Alexis, Brittney and Caitlin Laney. She is also survived by three great-grandchildren, many nieces, nephews and friends. She will be sorely missed by all those who knew and adorned her and she will be remembered as a loving wife, mother, sister and grandmother. The family will receive friends and family from 5 to 7 p.m. on Thursday at Moore's Chapel. Funeral service will be 1 p.m. Friday, Dec. 28, 2012, at Calvary Baptist Church, with the Rev.
