Allan H. Bellamy Jr., 84, of Pine Bluff, died Thursday, April 26, 2012 at Trinity Village Medical Center. He was born June 25, 1927 in Pine Bluff, son of Allan Bellamy Sr. and Fannie Jackson Bellamy Nugent. Mr. Bellamy was reared and received his early education in Pine Bluff, graduating from Pine Bluff High School in 1945. Allan served in the U.S. Marines in Pearl Harbor and Korea, where he played in the Marine Corps Band. He opened Nugent Grocery with his mother in the early 1950s. The company later became known as The Mad Butcher, Inc. Thanks to hard work and motivational tapes, Allan expanded The Mad Butcher to include 28 supermarkets and employing over 650 people in the 1970s. After his retirement, Mr. Bellamy sold his business to his employees. Mr. Bellamy was very active in the Pine Bluff community. He served as President of the Greater Pine Bluff Chamber of Commerce in 1967. He was elected to the Simmons First National Bank Board of Directors January 12, 1976. Mr. Bellamy fully retired from the Simmons board in 2002. He was also one of 26 founding members of Fifty For The Future of Pine Bluff, Inc. June 14, 1968. He was a member of First Christian Church, where he served as a Deacon and Elder for many years. Mr. Bellamy was Chairman of the Board when the church moved to their present location in the 1960s. Mr. Bellamy was recently elected as a Elder Emeritus at First Christian. Allan, along with his late wife, Joyce, loved the Foretravel Motor Home Club and traveled for many years in their beloved motor home. Mr. Bellamy was preceded in death by his wife, Joyce Raley Bellamy, whom he married Dec. 23, 1948 in Pine Bluff; parents; and great-grandson, Noah Allan Bellamy. Survivors include two daughters, Lee Bacus and her husband, Frank of Hendersonville, Tenn. and Melissa Abernathy and her husband, Scott of North Little Rock; son, Allan H. Bellamy III and his wife, Cheri of Texarkana, Ark.; 11 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Funeral services will be 1:30 p.m., Tuesday, May 1, 2012 at First Christian Church with Reverend Mike Snell officiating. Burial will follow in Memorial Park Cemetery.
