Helen Yvonne Hughes passed away at home Feb. 5, 2011. Born June 12, 1919 in Fayetteville, Ark. to the late William Hershel and Ruby Carroll Hughes. She was an only child raised by parents who adored her, and she constantly honored their memory. She received her Ph.D. from the University of Arkansas in 1959. After a brief career in journalism in northwest Arkansas she moved to Conway to teach at Hendrix College where she was a member of the Department of English and Humanities and taught courses in writing, fine arts, and literature. Her area of special expertise was Shakespeare where she provided unflagging support and valuable guidance to both students and faculty. She retired from Hendrix in 1981. Everyone who came in contact with Helen was positively influenced by her ceaseless intellectual curiosity. She especially enjoyed classical music, reading, the beauty nature provided in her glorious garden she lovingly tended and the birds she spent hours admiring. She is survived by former students and colleagues, many friends all of whom she considered family, and her most beloved dog, Darling. A memorial service will be announced at a later time. Cremation arrangements are by Roller-McNutt Funeral Home-Conway (501)327-7727. Memorials may be made to the charity of your choice. Online guest book: www.rollerfuneralhomes.com.
