Fang appointed as fisheries professor

The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff named Yingkai Fang, an assistant professor of fisheries and natural resource economics in the Department of Aquaculture/Fisheries.

In this appointment, Fang is responsible for developing a nationally and internationally recognized research program related to fisheries and resource economics with an emphasis on the application of quantitative methods and economic theory to timely and relevant topics on sustainable management of fisheries and natural resources.

Fang will conduct economic analyses and biological assessments of stream, lake and reservoir fish and fishery resources, bio-economic modeling, impact assessment and benefits and costs of sport fisheries, according to a news release.

Fang also will teach courses in fisheries economics and resource management and develop new courses that will fit into the overall teaching needs in the aquaculture/fisheries department.

Before UAPB, Fang was a research assistant at the University of Florida at Gainesville. She collected retail data to analyze the seafood market demand in the U.S. and analyzed the trend of international seafood trade and seafood production.

She has a doctorate in food and resource economics from the University of Florida, a master's degree in agricultural and resource economics from the University of California, Davis, and a bachelor's degree in tourism management from Zhejiang University in Hangzhau, Zhejiang, China.

"We are very fortunate to have Dr. Fang join our program," Rebecca Lochmann, chairwoman of the department of aquaculture/fisheries at UAPB, said. "Along with her expertise in economics, she will add a unique human dimensions element to our department that will make her work highly relevant to stakeholders."
