Preston Smith (from left), owner of Honey Badger Wrestling Club, helps wrestlers Jack Hooe, 12, and Mike Robertson, 10, wash a car Friday during a car wash benefit in the parking lot shared by The Joys of Swimming and Honey Badger Wrestling Club in Bentonville. The two businesses teamed to hold the free car wash with donations encouraged to help keep their bills paid during the covid-19 pandemic. Both businesses pened earlier in May under Arkansas Department of Health guidelines for gyms. The Joys of Swimming is offering families the ability to reserve the pool for themselves in 45 minute blocks and the wrestling club is largely limiting contact activities to wrestlers within the same family. Bonnie Adams, owner of The Joys of Swimming, said the covid-19 closings have "drastically" affected her business. Both owners said they have applied for financial assistance through the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security Act and are waiting to find out if they'll receive aid. Limits on the percentage of funds through the Paycheck Protection Program that can be used for non-payroll costs can be a hurdle to some small businesses with few employees. Adams said she has staff instructors, but that her biggest operating expense is rent. Smith said all of his coaches are volunteers and nearly all of his expenses are in the facility.
