Benton road closed for I-30 expansion

A $187.3 million project to widen Interstate 30 in Saline County will require a permanent road closing to begin work on a new configuration at South and Sevier streets in Benton starting today, the Arkansas Department of Transportation said.

West Sevier Street on the south side of I-30 will be closed to through traffic at its connection with the frontage road and I-30 eastbound on-ramp. Construction will change this street from a through road to a cul-de-sac, the department said.

Message boards, barricades, signs and flags will be used to notify the public at Rasburry Street and the frontage road that the West Sevier Street connection is closed. Access will be maintained for local businesses as well as the West South Street connections to the eastbound frontage road, the department said.

The work is part of a project to widen to six lanes from four a 5.5-mile section of I-30 between West Sevier Street and U.S. 70.

The public is advised to be cautious when traveling in the work zone. Areas adjacent to the interstate may experience noise impacts during nighttime hours. The project also includes improvements at the I-30/U.S. 67 interchange.
