New faces for Washington County Quorom Court in 2020

FAYETTEVILLE -- The Washington County Quorum Court will have at least five new faces after the 2020 elections.

The filing period for the March 3 party primary elections ended at noon Tuesday. Democrats fielded candidates in all 15 justice of the peace districts while Republican candidates filed in 13 districts.

Voters will chose replacements for five incumbents who chose not to run for reelection. Susan Cunningham, a Republican, will vacate her seat in District 2 in Springdale. Harvey Bowman, also a Republican, is not seeking another term in District 3, another Springdale district. Judith Yanez, a Democrat, did not file for another term in District 4 in Springdale. Democrat Sue Madison did not file for another term in District 12 in Fayetteville. Ann Harbison, a Democrat, did not file for reelection in District 14, which includes much of southern Washington County.

Two Democrats will run unopposed in two Fayetteville districts. Shawndra Washington did not draw an opponent in District 8 and Suki Lin Highers is unopposed in District 11. Both are incumbents.

There will be primary election contests for voters in both parties.

Democratic Party voters in District 7, west of Fayetteville and Farmington, will choose between Stephen M. Ritterbush and Janelle Bradford Smiley.

Republican Party voters in District 4, in Springdale, will choose between Frederick W. Anderson and Bill Ussery.

Casey Copeland, a Libertarian Party candidate, filed for the District 13 seat that covers much of the western part of the county. Copeland's name will appear on the Nov. 3 general election ballot.

Justices of the peace serve two-year terms are are paid $200 per meeting.

The following candidates in Washington County have filed for office for the party primaries, nonpartisan general and school board elections March 3. Filing closes Nov. 12. The deadline to register to vote in the March elections is Feb. 3. Early voting begins Feb. 17.
