Shortstop Christian Brasher went 3 for 5 with 2 RBI from the No. 8 spot in the batting order, while Tyler Smith and Alonso Bibiano had two hits each to lead the University of Central Arkansas (28-24, 18-10 Southland Conference) to a series-opening victory over Lamar at Vincent-Beck Stadium in Beaumont, Texas.

The Bears took control of the game with a four-run third inning. Jay Anderson singled to start the inning, Josh Ragan reached on an error by third baseman Robin Adames and Smith was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Anderson scored on Beau Orlando's sacrifice fly, then Tanner Wiley walked on a full-count pitch to reload the bases. After Bibiano struck out looking, Cole Fiori walked to score Ragan, which gave UCA a 2-0 lead and led to a pitching change.

Brasher fell behind in the count 0-2 to reliever Kristjan Storrie, but singled up the middle to score Wiley and Smith for a 4-0 lead. Nathaniel Sagdahl walked on five pitches to load the bases for a third time, this time with two outs, but Anderson lined out to end the inning.

Wiley had an RBI groundout and Bibiano added an RBI single in the sixth inning to give UCA a 6-1 lead, and an RBI single by Fiori in the ninth inning made it 7-2.

Cody Davenport (6-4, 2.22 ERA) picked up the victory for the Bears. He allowed both Lamar runs on 4 hits with 2 walks and 4 strikeouts while throwing 109 pitches over 7 innings. Dylan Johnson (0-5, 5.28 ERA) took the loss after allowing 1 earned run on 4 hits with 3 walks and 4 strikeouts over 22/3 innings.

JACKSON STATE 14, UAPB 4 (7)

Jackson State (31-23) scored six runs in the first inning and six more in the third on Thursday to eliminate the University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff (8-42) from the Southwestern Athletic Conference Tournament at Barrow Stadium in New Orleans and end the Golden Lions' season.

The Tigers scored two runs on a fielding error by Golden Lions third baseman Sergio Esparza, Wesley Reyes had an RBI single, Dezmond Chumley hit a two-run single up the middle and scored on Tyler Culpepper's triple to center field for a 6-0 lead.

UAPB rallied in the third inning, using an RBI single from Justin Robinson and a two-run error from Jackson State right fielder Chris Prentiss to cut the lead to 6-3. But in the bottom of the inning, the Tigers used a sacrifice fly from Chumley, an RBI bunt from Marshal Luiz, an RBI single from Prentiss, a two-run double from designated hitter Jaylyn Williams and a run-scoring balk to take a 12-3 lead.

Chumley added a solo home run -- his third of the season -- and Luiz scored when center fielder Equon Smith hit into a double play in the fourth inning to push the lead to 14-3 before Robinson scored on Ricardo Sanchez's RBI single up the middle in the fifth inning to set the final score.

Robinson was 3 for 4 with 2 runs scored, while Sanchez and Nick Kreutzer had two hits each for the Golden Lions, who finished with 10 as a team.

Garth Cahill (6-1) threw a complete game to get the victory for Jackson State, getting 3 strikeouts and hitting 2 batters in facing just 3 batters over the minimum. UAPB starter Bryce Roesch (0-5) took the loss after allowing 9 runs -- 4 earned -- on 8 hits with 1 strikeout in 21/3 innings.
