EDITORIAL: Why not more studies of dragons, telekinesis in New Zealand?

Kids really do say the darndest things. And that's not all. They can have the biggest imaginations and the dangedest dreams. Check out New Zealand, where an 11-year-old girl wrote to the prime minister asking that research be started in the categories of dragons and telekinesis.

For all the bickering over climate change, health-care spending and more, putting some time into studying dragons and telekinesis actually sounds a bit refreshing. And if nothing else, this girl (named Victoria) is resourceful. Enclosed in her letter to the prime minister, she tried to kick-start funding with a donation of $5, according to NPR.

Victoria doesn't want to waste taxpayer dollars on this research. She's willing to double down and invest her own resources.

Unfortunately, Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern sent Victoria her money back, writing, "We were very interested to hear your suggestions about psychics and dragons, but unfortunately we are not currently doing any work in either of these areas!"

What kind of craziness is this? To suggest the country where Smaug the Terrible resided isn't interested in doing research on dragons!

Oh well. Don't give up on your dreams, Victoria. If Prime Minister Ardern doesn't want to help you, maybe write Emilia Clarke. We hear she's always interested in these things.
