UA's Fassi, Kim to play in Augusta event

Amateur women's golf is coming to Augusta National, and University of Arkansas seniors Maria Fassi and Dylan Kim will be part of the inaugural event.

Fassi and Kim were among the 72-player field announced Tuesday for the Augusta National Women's Amateur, which will be played April 3-6, the weekend before the Masters.

The women's event features 54 holes of stroke play, with a cut to 30 players taking place after 36 holes. The first two rounds will take place on the Island and Bluff nines at Champions Retreat Golf Club on April 3 and April 4. The entire field will then play Augusta National for an official practice round April 5. The final round will take place at Augusta National on April 6.

Fassi and Kim qualified by virtue of their amateur world rankings. Fassi is 11th overall and Kim is 23rd overall.

TRACK AND FIELD

Arkansas' Compton honored

In recognition of his success with the University of Arkansas women's team, assistant coach Bryan Compton was named the National Collegiate Coach of the Year by the USA Track & Field Pole Vault High Performance and Development Committee last weekend at the National Pole Vault Summit in Reno, Nev.

Compton, who is in his 20th season with the Razorbacks, works primarily with the team's pole vaulters and throwers.

SWIMMING & DIVING

Arkansas trio earns SEC weekly awards

The University of Arkansas swimming and diving team swept the SEC weekly awards announced Tuesday. Sophomore Brooke Schultz was named Diver of the Week, Vanessa Herrmann was selected as Freshman of the Week, and junior Anna Hopkin was tabbed the Co-Swimmer of the Week.

Schultz set the 3-meter (391.43) pool record as well as the 1-meter (375.53) school and pool records in her springboard sweep against No. 25 Houston over the weekend. Her 1-meter score was a personal best, and both scores were the highest of any SEC diver for the week. This is her fifth weekly honor of the season.

Herrmann finished in the top three in all four events in which she competed, winning the 100 and 200 breaststroke. Both times were the fastest of any SEC freshman swimmer and were top-20 times in the NCAA for the week.

Hopkin won the four events she competed in and had the fastest times of the week in the SEC for the 100 and 200 freestyle. Her 400 freestyle relay time of 3:22.99 with teammates Kobie Melton, Molly More and Kiera Michailoff-Russell was the second fastest in the NCAA and fastest in the SEC.

Arkansas team recognized

The Arkansas swimming and diving team has been named a College Swimming Coaches Association of America Division I Scholar All-America Team, the organization announced Tuesday.

The award is in recognition of teams that achieve a grade-point average of 3.0 or higher during the 2018 fall semester. Arkansas had 11 athletes who recorded a 4.0 GPA in the fall semester.

BASKETBALL

HSU's Fofana, Harding's Lampo honored

Henderson State University junior forward Mike Fofana and Harding University sophomore forward Kelly Lampo were named the men's and women's players of the week in the Greater American Conference.

Fofana scored 19 points on 8-of-11 shooting in an 82-69 road victory against Ouachita Baptist University. He followed that up with 20 points, including 15 in the second half, and 13 rebounds in an 84-80 home victory against Arkansas Tech University.

Lampo led the conference in scoring and rebounding for the week as she averaged 24.0 points and 14.0 rebounds against Arkansas Tech and Southern Arkansas University. She had 18 points and a career-high 19 rebounds in a 68-67 overtime victory at home against the Golden Suns, then scored a career-high 30 points in a 66-46 road victory against the Muleriders.

French powers Lyon women

Samantha French had a career-high and game-high 25 points to go with 10 rebounds to key a 65-56 victory over previously undefeated Freed-Hardeman on Tuesday in Henderson, Tenn.

The Scots' victory snapped a 25-game winning streak for the Lions (19-1, 13-1) dating to last season.

Liz Henderson added 10 points and 11 rebounds for the Scots (15-3, 11-2 AMC).

FOOTBALL

Gift to help OBU install artificial turf

Ouachita Baptist University announced it has received funding assistance that will allow the school to install an artificial turf at Cliff Harris Stadium in Arkadelphia.

The turf is set to be ready when the new season kicks off in September.

The school said Tom Thrash, a lawyer in Little Rock who is a 1977 graduate of Ouachita Baptist, will give $800,000 to complete the project.

Thrash was a four-year starter at defensive back for the Tigers and earned first-team All-Arkansas Intercollegiate Conference honors twice. He also was inducted into the Ouachita Athletic Hall of Fame as a member of the 1975 team.
