Malvern prison inmate dies after being found unresponsive in cell

A prisoner was pronounced dead at the Ouachita River Correctional Unit in Malvern on Saturday afternoon after being found unresponsive on the floor of his cell, the Arkansas Department of Correction said.

Spokesman Solomon Graves identified the inmate as Antonio Rauls, 36.

Over the past few months, multiple inmates have died in prison facilities in Arkansas. At the maximum-security Varner unit, five prisoners died over several days in August.

Graves said the Arkansas State Police were immediately notified and responded to the scene. "ASP will be conducting an investigation into the death," Graves said. "The Department of Correction will be conducting an internal investigation in to the death." Rauls was serving a 10-year sentence from Cleveland County for possession of a controlled substance.
