Damsel,

directed by David Zellner and Nathan Zellner

(R, 1 hour, 53 minutes)

Scenic, stately, exasperating, and often surprisingly zany, unique western comedy Damsel follows Samuel Alabaster (Robert Pattinson), a wealthy pioneer who embarks on a journey across the American frontier so he can marry his beloved Penelope (Austrailian actress Mia Wasikowska of HBO series In Treatment).

Accompanied by hard-drinking Parson Henry (David Zellner, who directed 2014's superb Kumiko, the Treaure Hunter) and miniature horse Butterscotch, the rigors of Samuel's adventure cause the lines between good guys and bad guys to become blurry.

It's often ridiculous, with no clear destination apparent from its uneven script. By turns dark, absurd, and unpredictable, the film's greatest appeal is that it's reminiscent of some of the early work of the Coen brothers.

With Robert Forster, Joseph Billingiere.

Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom (PG-13, 2 hours, 8 minutes) It's the same idea as its predecessors in this enduring franchise -- idiotic, illogical, yet entertaining, with extraordinary visuals. Three years after the luxury theme park Jurassic World was destroyed by rampaging dinosaurs, those that remain are threatened when a dormant volcano erupts. Owen (Chris Pratt) and Claire (Bryce Dallas Howard) intend to rescue them. With Rafe Spall, James Cromwell, Jeff Goldblum, Geraldine Chaplin, Ted Levine; directed by J.A. Bayona.

Fahrenheit 451 (TV-14, 1 hour, 40 minutes) Michael B. Jordan (Black Panther) and Michael Shannon (The Shape of Water) star in this intense, violent and extravagantly made-for-HBO dystopian remake based on Ray Bradbury's classic novel in which books are banned and the media keeps everybody under control. With Lilly Singh, Keir Dullea, Sofia Boutella; directed by Ramin Bahrani.

Billionaire Boys Club (R, 1 hour, 48 minutes) Thrown under the bus by the presence of disgraced Kevin Spacey, this biographical crime drama follows a group of wealthy 1980s-era Los Angeles teenagers who, unhappy about not getting their hands on their family fortunes, brainstorm to create a ponzi scheme to swindle investors out of their money. The effort, initially successful, takes a bizarre turn. With Ansel Elgort, Taron Egerton, Emma Roberts, Jeremy Irvine, Rosanna Arquette, Billie Lourd, Judd Nelson, Cary Elwes, Jimmy Buffett; directed by James Cox. This was one of Spacey's final performances filmed before sexual misconduct allegations hit him in 2017, which affected the film's release schedule; its domestic opening weekend box office of $618 was the lowest of Spacey's career.
