A 58-year-old Arkansan was killed Tuesday afternoon after his vehicle crashed and landed on its top, according to state police.

The wreck occurred shortly before 4:45 p.m. on Arkansas 164 in Johnson County.

Authorities said 58-year-old Jerry L. Bankston of Ozark was driving a 2003 Dodge south on the highway when he drove off the road's west side. He then overcorrected, and the vehicle traveled across both lanes and into a ditch, eventually overturning, a preliminary report states.

Bankston died in the crash. A passenger in the Dodge — 37-year-old Wesley T. Perry of Altus — was listed as hurt.

State police said the road was dry and the weather was clear at the time of the wreck.

At least 355 people have died in crashes on state roads this year, according to preliminary data.
