Knife wielder fatally shot by central Arkansas police officer

A Jacksonville police officer shot and killed a man who was holding a knife to another man's throat Saturday night, according to a news release from the Jacksonville Police Department.

Police responded to the 1400 block of Stanphil Road at 10:38 p.m. after a report of an aggravated assault, the release said.

Upon arrival, they found a man who had been stabbed. Another man was on top of him with a knife to his throat. The officers ordered the assailant to put down the knife, but when he refused, an unidentified officer fired two shots, hitting the man in the right shoulder and left side of his back.

The unidentified man was pronounced dead at the scene, the news release said. The stabbing victim, who was also not identified, was taken to a local hospital.

The news release said the officer has been placed on administrative leave, in accordance with department policy, while the shooting is investigated.
