FORREST CITY -- An aviation landing station was established here when Captain Harney, aviation instructor at Eberts Field, near Lonoke, with Lieutenant Lomack, alighted for the purpose of seeking a site. Harry Watson for several months has interviewed every aviator that landed in this community in an effort to secure the landing station for Forrest City. He offered two sites, and a tract of 40 acres, about two miles southwest of the city, was approved by the aviators and donated for the use of the government by Henry Hood, the owner.

• Electors from six poverty areas in Pulaski County overthrew a number of incumbents Saturday in the annual elections for membership in the Neighborhood Action Councils of the Economic Opportunity Agency of Pulaski County. Howard Love, assistant director of field operations for the EOA, who was in charge of election procedure, said there was a turnout of 7,968 persons, compared with 6,842 in last year's balloting. Love said the defeat of the number of incumbent Council members was another indication of increased interest. "I feel that their defeat was not so much an expression of a desire for new leadership as a desire for improved leadership," Love said.

Until then, the state Youth Services Board is urging juvenile court judges around Arkansas to use discretion in committing young offenders to Youth Services Division, to avoid pushing others out of the system before they are ready.

• Whirlpool Corp. said Monday that it's laying off 700 workers at its Fort Smith plant in November, in part because of a weak economy and high raw material costs. The move will cut the refrigeration plant's work force by a third, leaving about 1,450 positions at the 1.2 million square-foot facility on Jenny Lind Road, a company official confirmed. As recently as 2005, the plant employed about 4,600 people.
