Orchids

Orchid Society of the Ozarks annual orchid auction will begin at 1 p.m. Sept. 16 at Northwest Technical Institute, 709 S. Old Missouri Road in Springdale. Preview starts at noon. Hundreds of exotic plants from around the world will be available for bidding. Anyone interested in growing orchids is welcome to attend.

The objective of the society is to stimulate interest in orchids and their culture. Monthly raffles for members and occasional public auctions offer affordable orchids and supplies for new and experienced growers.

SUV

The Benton and Washington counties' Sons of Union Veterans camp will hold their monthly meeting beginning with dinner at 6 p.m. Sept. 17 at Foghorn's Restaurant, 2221 W. Walnut St. in Rogers. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m.

The Fort Smith Camp of the Sons of Union Veterans will hold their monthly meeting beginning with dinner at 6 p.m. Sept. 20 at Western Sizzlin', 5720 Rogers Ave. in Fort Smith. The meeting will begin at 7 p.m.

The Sons of Union Veterans of the Civil War is a fraternal organization honoring the men who fought for the United States during the Civil War. The meetings are open to all.

Retired Teachers

The Washington County Retired Teachers Association will begin a new year with a $12 buffet meal at 11:30 a.m. Sept. 17 at the Western Sizzlin' in Springdale. Registration begins at 11 a.m. The meal will be followed by the business meeting at 12:15 p.m. Any retired school employees are welcome to join whether they were teachers or not. Dues of $20 are payable at registration.

New officers will be introduced. Matt Hughes of Hughes & Associates Insurance Agency will be answering questions about retirees insurance for this year. Christine Scott will help members get acquainted with an activity called "Two Truths and a Lie."

Members are asked to bring items for the charities the group supports, such as CEO, Children's Book Drive, Box Tops and Pop Tops for Schools.

Pieces 'N Patches

Pieces 'N Patches Quilt group will meet at 10 a.m. Sept. 17 at First Presbyterian Church 1901 S. 26th St. in Rogers. Linda Pumphrey will be leading a class featuring a block from her new book, Red & White Quilting: An Iconic Tradition in 40 Blocks.

Scissor, knife and rotary blade sharpening will be available.

Next meeting will be at 12:30 p.m. Oct. 1.

The group meets at 12:30 p.m. on the first Monday of each month for programs and at 10 a.m. on the third Monday for workshops. Visitors are welcome.

Stitched

Stitched with Love is a group formed for the purpose of sewing quilts, hats and pillows for children at Arkansas Children's Hospital. This month's meeting will be held at 9:30 a.m. Sept. 18 at Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church, 1300 N. Davis in Pea Ridge. Bring completed quilts and batting scraps to stuff pillows and scissors to cut batting for new kits. New members are welcome.

Rep Women

The Benton County Republican Women's Club will meet at noon Sept. 18 at Pleasant Grove Crossing Golden Corral in Rogers. Special guests this month will be Republican candidates who are facing an opponent in November; Dist. 95 Rep. Austin McCollum, Dist. 3 Sen. Cecile Bledsoe, Dist. 94 Rep. Rebecca Petty, Dist. 9 JP Susan Anglin, Dist. 15 JP Joel Edwards and Dist. 3 JP candidate Debra Hobbs.

The group meets on the third Tuesday of each month and networking begins at 11:30 a.m. Guests are welcome.

Senior Democrats

The Northwest Arkansas Senior Democrats will meet Sept. 18 with lunch beginning at noon at Western Sizzlin' in Springdale. The program will follow lunch. Speakers this month are Lt. Governor candidate Anthony Bland; land commissioner candidate Larry Williams, along with Washington County House of Representative candidates, Denise Garner, Lou Reed Sharp and Donald McKinney.

Red Hats

The Red Hat Society is a group for women created 20 years ago to connect like-minded women, make new friends and enrich lives through the power of fun and friendship. Flickering Flames is a Northwest Arkansas-based group that meets the second Wednesday of each month at an area restaurant. Women ages 50 and older are invited to join the group. There are no dues.

The Ozark Mountain Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution will meet at 11 a.m. Sept. 20 at Simmons Bank in Rogers. The program will be given by Sam Russell, a graduate of Hillsdale College and owner of the Buttered Biscuit in Bentonville. Anyone interested in joining DAR is welcome.

Mercedes-Benz

The Ozark Section of the Mercedez-Benz Car Club has been invited to join the South Central Regional event at the Pioneer Woman Mercantile in Pawhuska, Okla., on Sept. 22. The Mercantile is a restaurant, bakery and store. The 25,000-square-foot, 100-year-old building was purchased in 2012 and restored by Ree and Ladd Drummond. For those who may not know, Ree has her own Food Network show. The Mercantile, originally called the Osage Mercantile, was built in 1910 at the corner of Kihekah and Main Street. The South Central MBCA Region is the first to book an event in this new venue.

The menu will consist of spinach-artichoke dip, tomato soup with grilled cheese dippers, French dip sandwich, pecan or chocolate pie, iced tea and lemonade. The price will be $25 per person, which includes tax, not gratuity.

Calico Cut Ups

The Calico Cut Ups Quilt Guild of Bella Vista will meet at 1 p.m. Sept. 24 at the First United Methodist Church, 200 Boyce Drive in Bella Vista. The program for September will be presented by Linda Pumphrey, whose love for quilting grew from her mother and grandmother. She can trace back five generations of quilters in her family. Pumphrey has been in the quilting industry for almost 30 years and is currently working at Fibrix LLC, the makers of Mountain Mist batting. She has won international awards for her hand quilting. Her first book Mountain Mist Historical Quilts Mid-Century Quilts Made New was issued the fall of 2016. Her second book Red and White Quilting came out in 2017. She is a great resource for advice on choosing the right batting for a quilt project.

The meeting is free to a first-time guests and memberships are $25.

BC Dems

The Benton County Dems will meet for lunch beginning at 11 a.m. Sept. 24at the Golden Corral, 2506 W. Pleasant Crossing Drive in Rogers. The program will follow at noon. Guest speakers are Benton County justice of the peace candidates Parker Zielinski, District 5, Brie Madden, District 6; Matthew Kezhaya, District 7; Sam Slaton, District 8; Susie Kuilan, District 11; and Asele Mack, District 15.

Stage IV

Hope Cancer Resources offers a support group for men and women living with any type of stage IV cancer. This month's meeting will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Sept. 28at Hope Cancer Resources, 5835 W. Sunset Ave. in Springdale. Members must RSVP.

Altrusa

Altrusa International of Bentonville/Bella Vista is will hold their annual spaghetti dinner Oct. 4 at the First United Methodist Church in downtown Bentonville. The dinner includes homemade spaghetti, salad, toast, drink and dessert. The cost is $8 for adults and $4 for children. Take-out orders will be ready at 4 p.m. and dine-in begins at 5 p.m.

This is a fundraiser to make it possible to get over 1,700 dictionaries into the hands of all third-graders in Bentonville, Bella Vista, Gravette and Pea Ridge. Join the group for dinner or come for a club meeting at 11:30 a.m. at the River Grill on the first and third Tuesdays of each month.

Hope Cancer

Hope Cancer Resources offers a support group for patients who have completed treatment for any type of cancer. Empower Your Recovery is a five-week program that provides support and education for living beyond cancer, after treatment ends. The group will meet every Friday from 2:30 to 4 p.m. Oct. 12 until Nov. 9at Hope Cancer Resources, 5835 W. Sunset Ave. in Springdale. Members must RSVP by Sept. 28.
