Hike visits glade

Hill 'N Dale Hiking Club will hike five miles Thursday at Wildcat Glades Conservation and Audubon Center in Joplin, Mo.

All hikers are welcome.

Birding trip set

Northwest Arkansas Audubon Society will host a field at 9 a.m. Saturday at Wilson Springs Preserve in Fayetteville. Park in the lot behind the business at 2783 N. Shiloh Drive in Fayetteville.

The trip is to see birds and also collect data for the Northwest Arkansas Land Trust "bio-blitz" taking place from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Saturday at Wilson Springs.

Wilson Springs Preserve is a 121-acre wet prairie owned and managed by the land trust. It is home to many rare plant species and also the Arkansas darter, one of the state's rarest fish.

Team tops Cast Masters field

Dan Hudson and Allen Embry won the Cast Masters bass tournament held the night of Aug. 25 at Beaver Lake. They had five bass totaling 14.22 pounds.

Brian Simco and Chris Simco were second with five bass at 13.11 pounds. Allen Westfall and Jeff Swaffer placed third with five bass at 12.79 pounds.

Fourth through 10th, all with five bass unless noted, were: fourth, Doug King, Kent Rogers, four bass, 12.12; fifth, Ronnie Eldridge, Dennis Wright, four bass, 10.44; sixth, Johnny, Bud (last names not included in results), 10.32; seventh, Layne McCutcheon, Kelsey Yeager, 10.01; eighth, Justin Hoffman, Bill Ramsey, 9.83; ninth, Tim Clark, Gordon Harriman, 9.77; 10th, James Whittle, John Ogle, 8.71.

Kyle Anderson had big bass at 5.69 pounds.

Park, Audubon host cruises

Northwest Arkansas Audubon Society and Hobbs State Park-Conservation Area will host two-hour cruises this fall on the park's pontoon boat to see loons and other birds at Beaver Lake.

Trips are set for Oct. 27, Nov. 3 and Nov. 11. They depart from Rocky Branch Marina at 10 a.m. Experienced birders with Audubon will be on board to help identify birds.

Cost is $10. Register by calling the park visitor center, 479-789-5000.

Department plans turkey shoot

The 25th annual Northeast Benton County Fire Department turkey shoot and rib luncheon will be Sept. 29 at the main fire station, U.S. 62 and Wimpy Jones Road in Garfield.

Frozen turkeys will be awarded to successful shotgun shooters in clay bird and poker categories. There is an archery category.

Other activities include a corn-hole tournament, bingo, an auction, prize drawings and the Daisy BB gun range.

Lunch is served from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. for $9, or $5 for children 10 and younger. For more information call 479-359-3134.

Contest tests shotgun skills

Bella Vista Assembly of God church will host the third annual NWA Christian Fellowship Trap Shoot on Sept. 29. The shoot is at the Bella Vista trap and skeet range, 16301 Rocky Dell Hollow Road in Gravette.

Cost is $35 per person and includes shotgun shells. There are adult and youth divisions.

Park plans edibles workshop

Hobbs State park-Conservation Area will host a workshop on wild edible species from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at the park visitor's center on Arkansas 12 just east of the War Eagle Road intersection.

Participants learn to identify some edible species of Arkansas native and non-native vegetation and have the opportunity to cook and sample tasty dishes including sunchoke soup, persimmon crisp, muscadine ice cream and more.
