Ammonia leak sickens Tyson workers

A reported ammonia leak at a Tyson Foods plant in Lexington, Neb., sent more than a dozen workers to nearby hospitals for treatment Tuesday morning.

Springdale-based Tyson Foods responded to a report by ABC news affiliate KHGI in Kearney, Neb.

Tyson confirmed in the report that 20 workers were taken to a local hospital to be evaluated. Most were treated and released. No serious injuries were reported.

A Tyson spokesman said in an email Wednesday afternoon the plant has been deemed safe and was operating Wednesday.

"The health and safety of our team members is extremely important to us," Tyson spokesman Worth Sparkman said. "We're investigating this incident so we can prevent repeating it in the future."

More than 100 people were forced to evacuate a Tyson plant in Goodlettsville, Tenn., in May because of an ammonia leak. A month earlier, a chemical fire at a plant in Dawson, Ga., sparked by an ammonia leak, forced nearby people to flee their homes and workplaces. After being idle for a month, Tyson closed the plant.
