WWI centennial events set

A World War I reading retreat and an exhibit on American Indians in the military highlight events in September commemorating the centennial of U.S. involvement in World War I, as sanctioned by the Arkansas World War I Centennial Commemoration Committee.

"Patriot Nation: Native Americans in Our Nation's Armed Services" is a traveling exhibit by the Smithsonian Institution's National Museum of the American Indian. The exhibit will be on display at Sequoyah National Research Center at the University of Arkansas at Little Rock, Wednesday through Nov. 30. An opening reception will be held from 4 to 6 p.m. Thursday.

A "World War I Reading Retreat" is scheduled for Friday and Saturday at the Hemingway-Pfeiffer Museum and Educational Center in Piggott. The retreat will be a discussion among participants who have been provided three books to read related to Ernest Hemingway's World War I service.

The Arkansas World War I Centennial Commemoration Committee is part of the Department of Arkansas Heritage. More information on the state's commemorations can be found by emailing [email protected] or visiting the committee's website at wwiarkansas.com.
