A 70-year-old Little Rock man fended off a would-be robber with his cane outside a Waffle House Tuesday evening, authorities said. The 70-year-old was leaving the Waffle House at 8107 Geyer Springs Rd. around 9 p.m. when an assailant followed him, pushed him down and tried to grab his wallet, according to a Little Rock Police Department report.

The victim told police he struck his attacker with his cane, and the attempted robber then left the scene, walking north on Geyer Springs Road. He did not succeed in stealing anything, the report states. The 70-year-old complained of severe pain across his rib cage and neck, according to the report. He also suffered cuts to his hand and elbow, police said. Paramedics treated the man at the scene and transported him to Baptist Hospital, the report states. The victim said he had been talking with his assailant before the attempted robbery, and a person who worked at the Waffle House told authorities the attacker was the relative of another employee and frequently comes to the restaurant. The attempted robber is believed to be a brown-eyed, unshaven black male standing about 5 feet, 10 inches tall and weighing 180 pounds, police said.

Officers checked video footage from the business, but no suspects were named and no arrests had been made at the time of the report.
