Arkansas State University's Paragould campus to close in spring 2019

Arkansas State University will close its Paragould campus when the lease on the classroom space expires at the end of the year, university officials said.

The 200 students enrolled at the Paragould campus were notified of the closure Oct. 11 via email, said Bill Smith, associate vice chancellor for marketing and communications at Arkansas State University.

Greene County students, who received a tuition discount to attend the Paragould campus, can take classes at the same discounted rate if they wish to make the 30-minute drive to the main campus in Jonesboro in the spring, Smith said.

"When this [campus] was initiated in 2001, it was a lot harder to get here, but now we have a four-lane highway," Smith said. "We're hoping that helps the situation. We place great value on the students who come to us from Greene County."

Smith added that online classes will continue to be offered, or students can take general education courses at Black River Technical College, also located in Paragould.

Although Arkansas State will no longer rent the space at 2411 W. Kingshighway, Smith said the university may open another campus in Paragould in the future.
