Wilkinson scored five touchdowns to lead a Bulldog offense that gained 564 yards in a 62-33 win over Benton on Friday at Smith-Robinson Stadium.

The victory gives the Bulldogs (7-1, 5-0) control of the 6A-West race and the top-seed for the 6A playoffs. Benton (6-2, 4-1) which saw its six-game win streak end, can still get a first-round bye by winning at least one of its last two games.

This is the most points Greenwood has scored all season and continues a streak of scoring at least 41 or more points for seven straight games.

The two teams combined for more than 1,100 yards of offense. Greenwood also had 32 first downs. Benton gained 501 yards in the game.

Wilkinson finished with 160 yards rushing with four touchdowns and had four catches for 56 yards and another score. Peyton Holt threw for 285 yards and four touchdowns.

Benton opened the scoring after stopping a Bulldog drive with a fumble at the Panther 19. Garrett Brown capped the seven-play, 81-yard drive with a 33-yard touchdown pass to Michael Allison with 6:05 left in the first quarter. A bad snap led to a missed PAT attempt, leaving Benton with a 6-0 lead.

Greenwood running back Hunter Wilkinson dives into the end zone for a touchdown during the second quarter of the Bulldogs’ 62-33 victory over the Benton Panthers on Friday in Greenwood. Wilkin-son rushed for 160 yards and 4 touchdowns for the Bulldogs, and added 4 catches for 56 yards and a receiving touchdown.

The Bulldogs then seized control of the game with touchdowns on their next four possessions.

A 31-yard kickoff return by Max Vickery gave Greenwood possession at its 42. Seven plays later, Peyton Holt hit Luke Leonard with a 23-yard touchdown pass with 4:38 left in the first quarter. Grant Ennis made his PAT kick and the Bulldogs now lead 7-6.

Wilkinson opened the second quarter with a 21-yard scoring run to give Greenwood a 14-6 lead. After a Bulldog interception, Wilkinson ran a wheel route and hauled in a 37-yard pass from Holt for a 21-6 lead with 9:48 left in the first half.

After that, Benton could never truly catch up.

The Panthers opened the second half with a quick two-play, 80-yard drive when Brown hit Garrett Body for a 64-yard touchdown pass just 30 seconds into the third quarter to get within 27-20. Brown finished the game passing for 384 yards and three touchdowns.

Greenwood answered back quickly as Holt hit Treyton Dawson for a 38-yard touchdown pass at 10:27 of the third quarter. After the Bulldog defense stopped Benton, Holt scored on a 24-yard scramble to increase the Greenwood lead to 41-20 and was never in serious jeopardy after that point.

The Bulldogs travel to Sheridan next week while Benton hosts Lake Hamilton.
