Pieces 'N Patches

Pieces 'N Patches quilt group will meet at 10 a.m. Oct. 15 at First Presbyterian Church, 1901 S. 26th St. in Rogers. Alice McElwain will present the workshop on the manx quilting technique. As a certified quilt appraiser, she will also be available to give appraisals, both written and oral. There is a cost associated with the appraisals. Dues will be taken to be included in the new membership book.

The group meets at 12:30 p.m. on the first Monday of each month for programs and at 10 a.m. on the third Monday for workshops. Snacks will be served on program days and bring a dish for potluck on workshop days; beverages will be provided. Visitors are welcome.

SUV

The Sons of Union Veterans of Benton County will meet at 7 p.m. Oct. 15 at the Foghorns Restaurant at 2221 W. Walnut St. in Rogers. Dinner will be at 6 p.m.

The Sons of Union Veterans is a Fraternal organization dedicated to honoring those who fought for the United States during the civil war. The meeting is open to the public.

Quilt Guild

The Northwest Arkansas Modern Quilt Guild will meet at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 16 at Southside Church of Christ, 919 S. Dixieland Road in Rogers. Mary Perisho of Owl and Drum in Tulsa, Okla., will present a program on kids and sewing. Members are asked to bring their lap quilts and throws for the Women's Shelter project.

Stitched

Stitched with Love is a group formed for the purpose of sewing quilts, hats and pillows for children at Arkansas Children's Hospital. This month's meeting will be at 9:30 a.m. Oct. 16 at Mt. Vernon Presbyterian Church, 1300 N. Davis St. in Pea Ridge. Please bring completed quilts and batting scraps to stuff pillows. Also bring scissors, as we will be cutting batting for new kits. New members are welcome.

GOP Women

The Benton County Republican Women's Club will meet at noon Oct. 16 at Pleasant Grove Crossing Golden Corral in Rogers.

Special guests will be Carrie Perrien Smith, District 5 Justice of the Peace; Pat Adams, District 6 Justice of the Peace; Dustin Todd, District 11 Justice of the Peace; Cindy Acree, Bentonville City Council; and Stephanie Orman, Mayor.

BCRW meets the third Tuesday of each month with networking beginning at 11:30 a.m.

Democrats

The Senior Democrats of Northwest Arkansas will be meeting for lunch at 11:30 a.m. Oct. 18 at Western Sizzlin' in Springdale, then a meeting will follow at noon. The speakers for this month will be Larry Williams, candidate for Arkansas land commissioner. In addition we will hear from local candidates for the house of representative. The candidates are: Megan Godfrey, Kelly Scott Unger, Celeste Williams, Jene Huffman Gilreath, Gayatri Agnew and Christy Craig.

The Ozark Mountains Chapter of Daughters of the American Revolution will meet at 11 a.m. Oct. 18 at Simmons Bank in Rogers. There will be a program called "Stuff the Purse" to provide personal items for the Women's Shelter. Anyone interested in joining DAR is welcome.

The Flower, Garden and Nature Society of Northwest Arkansas will meet at 10 a.m. Oct. 20 in the Student Center of Northwest Technical Institute, 709 S. Old Missouri Road in Springdale. The Northwest Arkansas Ostomy Support Group will meet at 2 p.m. Oct. 21 at Hope Cancer Resources, 5835 W. Sunset Ave. in Springdale. Diana Gallagher will be leading a discussion on "Living Your Life to the Fullest." The educational meeting will begin at 1 p.m.

Orchids

Orchid Society of the Ozarks will meet at 1:30 p.m.Oct. 21 at the Northwest Technical Institute, 709 S. Old Missouri Road in Springdale. October might be show and tell month or a surprise program. Bring blooming plants for the monthly judging. Anyone interested in growing orchids is welcome to attend.

The objective of the society is to stimulate interest in orchids and their culture. Monthly raffles for members and occasional public auctions offer affordable orchids and supplies for new or experienced growers.

Calico Cut Ups

Calico Cut Ups will host Jenifer Dick of Harrisonville, Mo., at 9 a.m. Oct. 23 at the First United Methodist Church, 20 Boyce Drive in Bella Vista. Her workshop is titled "Tools of the Trade" and is a guided improv workshop on applique. Quilt size is 42 inches by 38 inches.

Dick took her first applique class in 2001, and that class changed her quilting life. The workshop quilt is made with 2½-inch squares. The quilt comes together in a controlled improv way that looks stunning and satisfying to make. The class is $35 and $10 for the pattern.

Benton County Dems will meet at noon Oct. 22 at the Golden Corral, 2506 W. Pleasant Crossing Drive in Rogers. Guest speakers are Jon Comstock, candidate for District 3, Arkansas Senate, and Josh Mahony, candidate for the U.S. House of Representatives, District 3.

QUILT

Quilters United in Learning Together will meet at 6:30 p.m. Oct. 25 at St. Thomas Episcopal Church, 2898 S. 48th St. in Springdale. Modern quilter Michelle Wilkie will be the speaker. A native of New Zealand, now living in North Carolina, Wilkie will also teach a workshop on Oct. 26 titled "Improvisation: Shapes and lines."

Cancer Support

Hope Cancer Resources offers a support group for men and women living with any type of stage IV cancer. This month's meeting will be from 1 to 2:30 p.m. Oct. 26at Hope Cancer Resources, 5835 W. Sunset Ave. in Springdale. Members must RSVP to attend.

Ozark Society

"Beer for the Buffalo," an Ozark Society benefit to support our very own Buffalo National River, will be from 6 to 8 p.m. Nov. 8 at Fossil Cove Brewery, 1946 Birch Ave. in Fayetteville. Proceeds from the event will go the the Ozark Society Legal Fund to cover expenses in the fight to protect the river from hog farm pollution.

The evening will include a short program, door prizes and opportunities to support the fight. Beer and pizza will be available for purchase with a portion of the proceeds benefiting the Ozark Society. Everyone is welcome.

Master Gardeners

The Washington County Master Gardener organization trains individuals in the science and art of gardening. These individuals pass on the information they learned during their training, as volunteers who advise and educate the public on gardening and horticulture. Trainees begin with 40 hours of training from leading experts on subjects ranging from creating the ideal growing environment to mitigating pests and hazards. Then volunteer their time to any of the 15 Master Gardener sanctioned projects. Once certified as a Master Gardener, education is continued through seminars, lectures, and programs locally and statewide and contribute those skills and knowledge within the county.

The Arkansas Cooperative Extension Services offers its programs to all eligible persons regardless of race, color, sex, gender identity, sexual orientation, national origin, religion, age, disability, marital or veteran status, genetic information or any other legally protected status, and is an Affirmative Action/Equal Opportunity Employer.

The Master Gardener course consists of a total of 40 hours of intensive instruction. There are two training options, classroom or online training in 2019. The classroom training sessions will be Jan. 28-31, and Feb. 1-2. All classes will be conducted from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. at the Washington County Extension Service office, 2536 N. McConnell Ave. in Fayetteville. Classroom registration fee is $100. The second option is the self-paced online training sessions that will begin Jan. 2 and end on March 31.Lessons are completed at your own pace at home. Online registration fee is $155. Applications are due by Nov. 5.
