Celebrate! Maya Project honors Angelou's legacy

Supporters and fans of acclaimed Arkansan poet Maya Angelou gathered Oct. 4 at Trapnall Hall to celebrate her legacy.

The Celebrate! Maya Project hosted the annual fundraiser. The nonprofit organization formed in 2014 -- the year of Angelou's death -- to keep her legacy alive in Arkansas. Angelou spent her childhood in Stamps in Lafayette County.

Janis Kearney, founding president of the project, welcomed guests. Stamps Mayor Brenda Davis received the 2018 Spirit of Maya Award. Other speakers included Marvell-Elaine School District Superintendent Joyce Cottoms and Jamee McAdoo, a poet and spoken-word artist.

More information about the project can be found at celebratemayaproject.org.
