Two days after being recognized as outstanding alumnus, 60-year-old slain in central Arkansas

A 60-year-old Maumelle man was shot and killed Friday, just two days after he was recognized as an outstanding alumnus of his college, authorities said.

At approximately 4:49 a.m., Maumelle police officers received a call about shots fired in the area of Kingspark Drive, according to a police report. Officers reported finding Jerry Stuart dead in his driveway with multiple wounds.

Just two days before his death, Stuart was announced as the 2018 outstanding alumnus of the year from Henderson State University's Black Alumni Association, according a post on the university's Facebook page. Two outstanding black alumni are chosen each year and recognized during homecoming, according to the university's website.

There was a banquet organized to recognize his award scheduled for Oct. 19, according to a Facebook post from the Black Alumni Chapter.

Kingspark Drive is a subdivision in north Maumelle near Odom Boulevard. According to Arkansas property records, Stuart and his wife have lived at 63 Kingspark Drive for more than 20 years after they purchased the home in May 1997.
