Simple game plan prevails as McClellan upends Hope

LITTLE ROCK MCCLELLAN 62,

HOPE 15

The Crimson Lions of Little Rock McClellan are in a new conference this season and they are not familiar with many of the teams they are playing. But their game plan has been a simple one.

"We just do what we do," Coach Marcus Moody said. "We just play our brand of football. We just stick to our identity and we do what we have to do every Friday night."

It's been working well, as evidenced by the Lions' 62-15 homecoming victory over Hope on Friday night.

Hope, which ended a 25-game losing streak last week against Hot Springs, put together a nice opening drive, which included a 41-yard pass from Hunter Heliums to junior Mekhi Henderson, and took a 3-0 lead on a 30-yard field goal from Chris Torres.

After that, it was all Lions (6-0, 3-0 5A-South).

Jaylon Williams scored on a 2-yard run and Xavion Morgan, whose interception set up the possession, made it 12-3 on a 1-yard run. He also ran in the two-point PAT.

A bad punt snap set up a short field and McClellan led 20-3 after Broderick Lacy scored on a 13-yard run. Darion Richard recovered an onside kick and Morgan added his second TD on a 7-yard dash. The last three touchdowns took less than four minutes.

Senior Ni'Korean Muldren, who had a 91-yard TD last week, added a 91-yard kickoff return and Hope climbed to within 26-9 with 9:19 left in the half.

McClellan answered with a 40-yard score from Derrick Lloyd Jr., and Lacy ran in the two-pointer. Morgan hit Damion Martin, Jr., with a 21-yard TD pass and followed with a 63-yarder to junior Brandon Williams. His third consecutive TD pass went to Lacy for 10 yards.

The Lions led 54-9 at halftime.

Josiah Johnson scored on a 30-yard run in the second half and the Bobcats added a final score on a 2-yard run by Kenneth Anderson.

"I'm proud of my guys,'' Moody said. "We got off to a quick start. We ran the football well. We threw it well. We had a bunch of big plays from some guys. The offensive line was really good tonight.

"Hope came out and hit us in the mouth a little bit, threw the ball around on us. They've got a really good, solid quarterback. We just played a really well-rounded ballgame."
