Political forums set in Sebastian County

FORT SMITH -- Forums have been scheduled this month to give Sebastian County voters a look at state and local candidates running for office in the Nov. 6 general election.

The University of Arkansas at Fort Smith will hold five forums throughout October on campus. They will be hosted by the university's chapter of the American Democracy Project to boost civic engagement on campus and within the community.

The forums and the participants will be:

• Arkansas House District 77: Republican incumbent Justin Boyd, Libertarian Stephen Edwards and Democrat Luke Pruitt, noon Monday, Windgate Art and Design theater.

• The nonpartisan Fort Smith Board of Directors At-Large Position 5: Robyn Dawson and Samuel Price, 5 p.m. Monday, Windgate Art and Design theater.

• Arkansas Attorney General: Libertarian Kerry Hicks and Democrat Mike Lee, noon Oct. 11, Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center Reynolds Room. Republican incumbent Leslie Rutledge will not attend, according to the university.

• Chairman of the Democratic Party of Arkansas: state Rep. Michael John Gray and chairman of the Republican Party of Arkansas chairman Doyle Webb, noon Oct. 15. Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center Reynolds Room. They will discuss the role of political parties in the electoral process.

• Sebastian County Judge: Democrat Mosie Boyd and Republican incumbent David Hudson, noon Oct. 31, Smith-Pendergraft Campus Center Reynolds Room.

The League of River Valley Voters will hold a candidate forum at noon Oct. 15 in the main Fort Smith Public Library for two races.

The races are:

• State Senate District 8: Libertarian William Whitfield Hyman and Republican District 76 state Rep. Mat Pitsch.

• Fort Smith Board of Directors At-Large Position 5: Robyn Dawson and Samuel Price.
