Camden Harmony Grove rides big plays from Daniel

GLEN ROSE -- When Camden Harmony Grove needed a big play, there was junior Damion Daniel.

Daniel caught a couple of touchdown passes and had a big interception in the fourth quarter as the Hornets stayed alive in the Class 3A playoffs with a 47-28 victory over the Glen Rose Beavers on Friday night.

Daniel grabbed touchdown receptions of 59 and 57 yards as the Hornets (9-3) raced to a 27-14 halftime lead, but it was his interception with five minutes remaining that clinched the victory when his team held a 40-28 edge. Daniel returned the interception 35 yards, which led to junior Xalon Falls grabbing a 28-yard scoring pass from Gannon Bearden with 3:24 left to set the final score.

"Any win this time of year is big,'' Harmony Grove Coach Ernie Horstkamp said, "because there aren't any bad teams left.

"I thought we played well. We knew this would be a tough game. Glen Rose is so sound."

Up next for the Hornets is a trip to Booneville, a 41-13 winner over Walnut Ridge, for next week's quarterfinals.

It was the Hornets' ability to hit the home run that did in the Beavers (9-2). Falls went 70 yards on their first play to grab the lead.

Glen Rose went up 7-6 when Matthew Clark caught a 51-yard touchdown pass from J.T. Towers, and Dalen Baldwin ripped the ball from a Hornets' runner and returned it 7 yards for a score with 2:24 left in the first quarter for a 14-6 lead for the Beavers.

After Dylan Garrett's 41-yard kickoff return, Falls scored on a 43-yard pass from Bearden. Shaun Lucas ran in the two-point conversion to tie the game at 14-14.

Daniel's first scoring pass, this one from 59 yards, made it 21-14. On the final play of the half, Bearden and Daniel connected again, this one from 57 yards for another score. The PAT failed and it was 27-14 at the half.

Lucas scored on the first play of the second half on a 70-yard run for Harmony Grove for a 34-14 advantage.

Towers scored on a 16-yard run to pull Glen Rose within 34-21 with 10:42 left in the third quarter.

Falls took a short pass in the backfield and swept around right end for a 79-yard score and 40-21 lead with 7:04 left in the third.

Glen Rose did not go away. Baldwin scored on a 6-yard run for a 40-28 game. Nicholas Prichard blocked a punt, and the Beavers were on the Hornets 25. The drive ended on an incomplete fourth-down pass into the end zone.

The Beavers were driving again when Daniel came up with his interception.
