First things first: Peacekeepers host fundraiser for Center Against Family Violence

No one showed up wearing a madras, the five-piece, plaid-accented costume known as the national dress of the Caribbean island of St. Lucia.

But guests did don vacation and cocktail attire -- along with festive attitudes -- for Caribbean Cabaret, the 13th annual spring fundraiser benefiting Women & Children First: The Center Against Family Violence. Themed "Summer in St. Lucia," the event took place May 19 in the atrium of Pavilion in the Park. The occasion was hosted by Peacekeepers, a group of volunteers committed to serving the shelter, its staff and guests through fundraisers, service projects and special events.

Attendees trickled in to bid on silent-auction items while enjoying nibbles and tropical libations and the sounds of the Tiger Steel Drum Ensemble from Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia. Morning-show hosts Heather Brown and Adam "Poolboy" Dunaway of KLAL-FM steered a short program that consisted of remarks from Angela McGraw, executive director of Women and Children First, and a live auction. The event wrapped up on the notes of recorded music played by Tyler "Moose" Bjornson, also of the radio station.
