Trump no ‘con artist’; president is delivering

In his recent letter, Bass Trumbo is convinced that President Trump is a con artist. If he is, Washington, D.C., is certainly the right place for him to be. Nothing fits the definition of con artist more than a professional politician.

A problem with that reasoning is that Donald Trump is far from a professional politician and most con artists, like politicians, tell you one thing and do another. Trump promised to move the American embassy to Jerusalem and he is doing it. Clinton, Bush and Obama all supported moving the American embassy to Jerusalem and Congress passed a law in 1995 that required the embassy to be moved to the capital of Jerusalem by 1999 and none followed through.

Trump promised to fight illegal immigration at the borders, to go after unfair trade deals with China and others. He promised to make NATO and United Nations partners assume more financial burden. He promised to reduce taxes and increase jobs and he promised to slow the number of abortions supported by the government and to defend religious liberty. President Trump has accomplished all of those things and is working on making them even better. He is battling Congress to get a protective wall built on the border as promised. He would have accomplished twice as much if he wasn’t fighting those entrenched in the DC swamp.

Yes, President Trump tore up the Iran agreement and he undid countless presidential decrees enacted by Obama. The Iran deal was a toothless compromise with an evil nation, putting our allies in the Mideast in extreme danger. I still remember the pictures of an American plane landing in Iran and unloading pallets of money to make the deal and retrieve a couple of hostages.

President Trump has offered nothing to North Korea but is planning a summit to talk peace and denuclearization. Kim Jong-un released three Americans to Secretary of State Pompeo without even one pallet of money. I think the summit may be successful and bring peace to the Koreas, even as the president’s political enemies seem to hope for failure.

Skillful con artists, in all political parties, have been suckering voters for years. They have done it with slick speeches and phony promises. Trump does draw a crowd but he is anything but a slick speaker and so far, he is keeping his promises. People are feeling more secure, jobs are returning and the tax cuts put money directly into the pockets of working people. The work is not done, but it is very early in his term. Considering the obstructionism, anger and hatred he is battling, Mr. Trump is doing a phenomenal job.

It’s true that many voters dislike the president since all they see is constant attacks and bashing by the media, the Democrats and the entertainment industry. As he fulfills more of his promises, President Trump may shed light on the real con artists who have fooled the American people for years.
