Blood center

seeks donors

CBCO strives for area blood reserves to be at around a three-day supply for all blood types. O negative and B negative blood supplies are currently at less than a one-day reserve level. This is a critical shortage and donors are strongly urged to give as soon as possible at a CBCO blood drive or donor center near you.

Food bank

open house

Employees, board members and volunteers of the River Valley Regional Food Bank will tell the story of the work of this nonprofit agency during its open house from 5 to 7 p.m. May 16 at the office and warehouse, 1617 S. Zero St. in Fort Smith. The food bank provides a lifeline to more than 190 food pantries and other food-serving efforts throughout eight Arkansas counties. The building includes the 55,000-square-foot food storage and distribution warehouse and agency office, and also houses the food bank's parent organization -- the Crawford-Sebastian Community Development Council.

Plenty of parking is available. Open house guests are asked to enter the building from the customer service area on the west side of the building.

Screenings

offered

The Frank and Barbara Broyles Foundation is hosting free memory screenings between 10 a.m. and noon on the third Wednesday of each month at their Fayetteville offices, 3810 N. Front St., Suite 3. The screenings are conducted by staff and doctors of Woodland Research Northwest. The next screenings will be conducted on May 16. No appointment is necessary.

The memory screenings, which last about 30 minutes, help determine if more in-depth cognitive testing is needed. Participants receive a copy of their results to share with their doctor. The Broyles Foundation, along with Woodland Research Northwest, are proponents of early detection of Alzheimer's Disease and other types of dementia.

Photo contest

A "Most Interesting Photo" contest will be held May 19 at the North Shore Lake Fayetteville Park. Contestants will need to register between 4:30 and 5 p.m. at the pavilion. Each contestant may enter only one photo, taken in the park, of any subject, from 5 p.m. to 6:30 p.m. May 19. Emphasis will be on the content of the photos and not on the technical quality. A digital photo from a phone, camera or other device is welcome. The purpose is to enjoy some fun, nature, take an interesting photo and see what others consider interesting. Entries will be projected on a large screen at the park pavilion and contestants will have an opportunity to tell why their photo is interesting. A panel of judges will select the most interesting photo around 7 p.m. The winning entry will be awarded $100. Second and third place entries will receive certificates.

The contest is free and open to the public. This is a Wondestry program, using reason, science and evidence to understand ourselves, the universe and our place in it.

Kids-only

race set

The second annual Obstacle Runaround is an obstacle race for kids 5 to 12 years old and will take place at 9 a.m. June 9 at The Jones Center in Springdale.

Kids will navigate through various obstacles including a mud run, slip n' slide, tire run, balance beam walk and more. Each child who completes the challenge will receive an Obstacle Runaround sweatband.

Price for participation is $25 if participants sign up before the race, and $30 to sign up on the day of the race.

SHS reunion

scheduled

The Springdale High School annual All-School Alumni Reunion will be held beginning at 10 a.m. June 30 in the Springdale Senior Citizen Building, 203 Park St. Bring a covered dish to share for the potluck, which will begin around noon. The reunion is for all classes, and parents, children, grandchildren, spouses and friends are invited. There is no cost for the reunion, but donations will be accepted.
