• Representative John E. Miller of Melbourne was offended by some paintings of nudes in an art exhibit in the Capitol rotunda and he persuaded the Arkansas Legislative Council Thursday to officially express its disapproval. Miller, 39, offered a resolution condemning the exhibiting of the paintings at the capitol as "contrary to the public morals." He said it was especially in bad taste since many school children were touring the Capitol at this time of year. The paintings are part of a collection of art by students at the state-supported colleges an universities.

• Two barges that broke free of a 12-barge tow on the Arkansas River early Friday ended up against the upriver side of a lock and dam near Morrilton, authorities said. No one was hurt in the accident, which occurred between 3 a.m. and 4 a.m., but the Arthur V. Ormond Lock and Dam No. 9 will remain closed until the barges are recovered and the lock and dam is inspected, said P.J. Spaul, a spokesman for the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers in Little Rock, which operates locks and dams on the river.
