IT HAPPENED LAST WEEK
Gentry senior Chastery Fuamatu broke two records with one throw of the shot put during the Class 4A state meet at Pocahontas.
Fuamatu, who has signed with Arkansas State, broke the Class 4A state record and the overall state record with her throw of 44 feet, 2.5 inches. The previous Class 4A mark was 41-9 1/2, set in 2001 by Sarah Pfeifer of Ozark. The previous state overall mark in the shot put was 44-0 1/2, set by Rogers' Heather Lakey in 1997.
Six other state records were broken during last week's state meets. Those athletes entering the record books are:
• Tiana Wilson, Hamburg -- broke the Class 4A state record in the girls 200 with a time of 24.49 seconds.
• Edie Murray, Lake Hamilton -- cleared 13-3.25 to break the Class 6A girls pole vault record.
• Rhett Nelson, Trinity Christian -- rewrote the Class 1A boys pole vault record when he cleared 15-6. He had the previous mark when he cleared 15-4 last year.
• Keagen Tharp, Midland -- broke the Class 1A boys triple jump record with a leap of 44-5.5. The previous record was 44-4.5 by Avery Howell.
• Noah Eskew, Jessieville -- ran the 800 in 1 minute, 58.10 seconds to set the Class 3A boys record. The previous mark was 2:0042 by Bryce Wiedower of Harding Academy in 2016.
• Nate Mallard, Piggott -- broke the Class 3A boys shot put record with a toss of 50-4.25. The previous record was 49-8.75 by Corning's Klint Harvey in 2015.
