Springdale partners for road improvement

SPRINGDALE -- City Council members voted 7-0 Tuesday night to spend $76,000 to do street improvements along North Shiloh Street.

The city will partner with Bill Kendrick, who recently built the house at 633 N. Shiloh St., to add gutters, curbs and sidewalk, explained Mayor Doug Sprouse. Kendrick knew the improvement was the landowner's responsibility when building in Springdale, Sprouse said.

The project contractor Thomlinson Construction worked with the city to plan construction on both sides of the street at a lower rate than if the projects were completed and paid separately, Sprouse said. The project will extend the improvements north past Oak Avenue.

The project will be paid from the city's capital improvement projects fund.

In other business, Courtney Kremer, director of animal services for the city, announced a time change in a public forum planned to provide residents with information about the city's new animal shelter and its proposed sites.

The session is planned for 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. Thursday in the City Council chambers at the City Administration Building. The meeting will start with a presentation by Shelter Planners of America, the project architects, about the features of the new shelter building. City staff also will discuss the two proposed sites for the shelter, in J.B. Hunt Park and on McCollough Avenue in the city's industrial district.

Staff and officials will be on hand before and after the presentation to answer questions and receive input from residents. Public comment on the shelter is open until 5 p.m. May 24 at the animal shelter, the mayor's office or on the city website.
