"As an activist, she not only worked for trans rights, but also went to Standing Rock, stood for workers' rights and supported any cause that sought to protect our basic human rights and dignity," he said. "She was a good friend, full of empathy and children loved her. Her and my 8-year-old were close and watching them interact filled me with joy."

Many of her friends have written on Facebook that she will be missed.

The body has been sent to the state crime lab, Murphy said.
