Alejandro Venegas scored the contest's only goal in the 58th minute on a cross from deep inside the goal box.

Fayetteville coach Joe Thoma credited the score to some halftime adjustments.

"We told them at halftime that when we pressure their backs somebody is going to make a mistake," Thoma said. "Then we'll get it and slide it to the forward. Alejandro went in one-on-one."

Rogers coach Stephen Peck said his team failed to finish its opportunities. The Mounties out-shot Fayetteville 12-4, controlling possession for much of the match, but couldn't put a shot past Fayetteville keeper Mason Smith, who finished with seven saves.

"We controlled the majority of the game, especially possession and attempts on goal," Peck said. "But we didn't shoot it like we should have. When you have 12 shots, but you come away with no goals, that's an issue.

"We've got to learn to find something other than the keeper. We're not challenging anyone. When we do take shots, they're hard shots, but they're right at the keeper. We've got to start challenging the keeper."

Still, Rogers (6-4-1, 1-2 7A West) had a chance to take the lead early in the match when a Nelson Rivas shot in the 35th minute bounced off the left post and out of bounds.

Fayetteville (4-7, 2-1) had its opportunities as well. Junior Jan Bobda had an open look fly over the crossbar in the 32nd minute, then hand another chance stopped by Mounties' keeper Anthony Garcia four minutes into the second half.

"Our guys have been working to play a full 80 minutes, and we did," Thoma said.
