Several hurt as race start line structure collapses in Texas

BROWNSVILLE, Texas — Officials say several runners have been hurt when part of a metal race starting line structure collapsed before a marathon in South Texas.

A statement from the city of Brownsville says the accident happened Saturday morning just before the Bi-National 10K & 5K Run.

Authorities are trying to determine what caused the collapse that forced some participants to be transported by ambulance to hospitals for evaluation. The National Weather Service had issued a wind advisory for Saturday morning through early evening.

Officials didn't immediately say how many people were hurt before the start of the race, which continued as scheduled following the accident.

Brownsville police referred questions to a city spokeswoman, who did not immediately return messages Saturday to provide additional details.
