• The fragile construction schedule to provide navigation upstream to Pine Bluff and Little Rock in December will survive the current high water on the Arkansas River, the Army Engineers said Thursday. The Engineers had been concerned for several days that it might be necessary to flood cofferdam-protected work areas at the locks and dams downstream from Little Rock to relieve the pressure from high water on the outside, but officials said Thursday this wouldn't be necessary. The cofferdams downstream from Little Rock are all high enough and strong enough to withstand the high water that is expected to crest in the area over the week end, according to W. W. Ralphe, chief of the construction division of the Little Rock District of the Engineers.

• If commercial diamond mining is ever allowed at the Crater of Diamonds State park in Murfreesboro, all potential revenue should go back into state parks instead of the state's general fund, Sen. Steve Bell of Batesville said Friday. Bell and Sen. Neely Cassady of Nashville have introduced Senate Bill 672, which would guarantee just that. "At some point -- maybe -- it's going to produce a lot of revenue," Bell said. That revenue, he said, would come in the form of severance taxes and royalties.

• As thousands of people watch fireworks burst over the Arkansas River during Riverfest in May, some will get a prime view from 75 feet above the water on the Junction Bridge. Renovations on the bridge are nearing completion, and it's scheduled to open about a week before Riverfest, the annual three-day arts and music festival held Memorial Day weekend. "It's going to make that river flowing in between a lot smaller," said DeAnna Korte, Riverfest's executive director. When completed, the bridge will connect Little Rock's River Market district to North Little Rock's Riverfront Park.
