Erin Rowe

Where I live: on the west side of Bella Vista, beyond the golf course. I love it, it's beautiful. My husband and I love the outdoors, and here we're surrounded by a forest where you can see the deer and birds.

Occupation: I'm a chef turned author. Late last year I released An Ozark Culinary History: Northwest Arkansas Traditions From Corn Dodgers to Squirrel Meatloaf. As a practicing chef, I do catering, private home events and teach cooking classes.

My favorite space: the kitchen.

Why: I have a counter big enough to do anything. If I stand at end of the island, I can see into the rest of the place, see where the dishes will go. I can see into the dining room, where dinner will go, and into the living room, where the hors d'oeuvres are headed. I can see people enjoy it and that makes me really happy.

If I could make one improvement: I dream in kitchens, I sketch the ones that I like. Once I own a house, I want to design my own kitchen to a very practical, restaurant style. Not one with granite countertops that's picture perfect, but one that's all stainless steel and has a lot of the elements I had in cooking school. I'd love a gas burner with a flat top range, dual ovens and an overhead salamander broiler. I'd love to have enough space and more ovens to teach cooking classes from my home.
