University of Arkansas at Little Rock

Makell Swinney of Fort Smith was among a group of 20 University of Arkansas at Little Rock students to attend the Bilateral Model Arab League conference Feb. 16-18 at the University of Houston-Clear Lake.

The Model Arab League is a student leadership development program created by the National Council on U.S.-Arab Relations. It is a simulation of an international organization, the League of Arab States, which represents 22 countries. The students got a chance to put their diplomatic skills to use as they had a special meeting with Deputy Vice Consul General of Qatar Ahmad Al Jufairi at the Qatar Consulate.

St. Olaf College

Ruby Erickson of Fayetteville has been named to the fall 2017 dean's list at St. Olaf College in Northfield, Minn., with a grade-point average of 3.75 or higher.

Ouachita Baptist University

Two local students attending Ouachita Baptist University in Arkadelphia were named finalists at the 2018 Arkansas National Association of Teachers of Singing recently at the University of Central Arkansas in Conway.

Students are judged by NATS members from other educational institutions and private studios and receive written critiques on their performances, focusing on musicianship, artistry, expression and other factors.

To prepare for the competition, students met weekly with their voice instructors to receive guidance on their repertoire selections, performance practices and vocal techniques.

Local finalists included Cedar Valdez of Garfield, a sophomore musical theater major, third place in the lower college music theater men division; Zach Myers of Greenwood, a junior musical theater major, first place in the upper college music theater men division.

Local semifinalists included Sophie Chiocco of Bella Vista, a freshman musical theater major, semifinalist in the lower college music theater women division; Emma Pitts of Clarksville, a junior music education major, semifinalist in the sophomore women and lower college music theater women divisions; Alex Marrin of Greenwood, a sophomore musical theater major, semifinalist in the lower college music theater men division; Cody Walls of Van Buren, a senior musical theater major, semifinalist in the junior men and upper college music theater men divisions.

University of Kansas

A number of local students at the University of Kansas in Lawrence were named to the fall 2017 honor rolls, meeting requirements of their colleges of study.

John Brown University

Construction management students John Brown University in Siloam Springs received second place in the commercial building category at the Associated Schools of Construction Region 5 annual competition in Dallas, sponsored by TEXO. University teams in this category were asked to develop a construction project proposal in 16 hours for the Mirmar Development Center in Irving, Texas, and make a formal team presentation to a panel of construction professionals. Teams had to develop costs, work schedules, subcontractor bids, specifications and plans to resolve potential quality or safety issues for hat was built four years ago.

JBU senior Emiley Hegel won best presenter in the commercial category, and freshman Kyle Beardsley received a scholarship from the TEXO foundation.

Colgate University

Mason Jones of Holiday Island earned the fall 2017 dean's award with distinction at Colgate University in Madison County, N.Y., with a grade-point average of 3.6 or higher.
